Happy Holidays!

Announcements |

Dear MISD Families,

We are wishing you all a wonderful Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year! The environments at all levels had such a special day celebrating. The Toddler Classroom made a pasta lunch and then enjoyed watching the performances of the Primary Classrooms. After the Primary Classrooms sang their songs, they enjoyed a communal lunch together on the playground. The Elementary Classrooms joined together to share their pizza lunch and play games.

Thank you for the overwhelming amount of gifts and appreciation we were shown this week. We all feel very loved! Our biggest gift is being with your children each and every day. We look forward to a great 2019 filled with much joy and laughter.

Looking forward to hearing all the children’s great stories when they return on Tuesday, January 8th.

With love,

Annual Giving and Thanksgiving!

About MISD |

Dear Parents,

Today was an exciting day at MISD!  It was the last day of our Annual Giving Campaign and the children enjoyed their Harvest Lunch with their classrooms.  Each classroom invited a member of our administration to eat lunch with them as their special guest.  The tables were set beautifully, the classrooms smelled of wonderful food and the faces around the tables were ones of pure joy!

The Toddler table set ready to welcome the children to their Harvest Lunch.

As for our Annual Giving Campaign, as a whole school we collectively had over 87% participation and raised over $31,000.  We thank each of you who contributed to our campaign and truly value your generosity.  If you have not yet donated and would still like to contribute, we would be so thankful as we would love to reach 100% participation by the end of the year.  Please click here!

We wish you all a wonderful, meaningful and relaxing Thanksgiving vacation.  We are thankful each day to have the privilege to work with your beautiful children!

Happy Thanksgiving from Upper Elementary.

ONE MORE WEEK!

Annual Giving Campaign |

Dear Parents,

There is one more week left in our Annual Giving Campaign!  As you can see from the thermometer in front of the Children’s House, over half of you have already donated! We appreciate your support and generosity greatly!  It is families like you that make a difference in our community of children, teachers and staff.

We thank you!

With one more week left, we feel hopeful that we will reach our goal of 100% participation.  Every donation is impactful and we are counting on every family who believes in our mission to invest whatever amount you feel comfortable with.  Remember, “It is the small pieces that when put together create a masterpiece.”  Please kindly place your child’s decorated puzzle piece in your donation envelope with your contribution as these pieces will be used in an all-school project commemorating our 15th year!

Half Way Through!

Annual Giving Campaign |

Dear Parents,

We are exactly half way through our Annual Giving Campaign!  We thank those of you who have already donated and we truly appreciate your support in working in partnership with our school.

For those of you who have yet to donate, either big or small, we encourage you to do so as we are seeking 100% participation from all our families.  Collectively, we need everyone’s donations to make a difference.  Here is an update on each classroom’s overall participation:

  • Toddler: 44%
  • Primary 1: 30%
  • Primary 2: 27%
  • Lower Elementary: 38%
  • Upper Elementary: 14%

We are counting on each of you to make a generous gift so that we may continue to serve the developing spirit and mind of the children and enable them to reach their fullest potential.  Remember, your contributions, unlike tuition, are tax deductible.

Together, we can continue building, growing and supporting this one-of-a-kind community of parents, children, teachers and staff that we call “home”.

Help Make a Difference!

About MISD, Annual Giving Campaign |

MISD Families,

We need your support!

The Annual Giving Campaign is a time in which we bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of operating a genuine Montessori school, as well as offering financial support to our current families, providing opportunities for teacher professional development, and ultimately enabling us to maintain the level of quality we have always provided.  We have a goal to reach $50,000 and we are asking for 100% participation.

The colorful signs outside the school are tracking each classroom’s overall participation.  Be an active member of the MISD Community and help your classroom to reach 100% participation!

In addition to current families, many grandparents, alumni, and friends make donations every year.  So please, pass this along to your friends and family and ask them to consider supporting your child’s school this “giving” season.  Remember, every gift, no matter how small is valued, tax-deductible and makes a difference.  You can donate by clicking here or by bringing in a check or cash to the Children’s House Office.

Please help support your school.

Upper Elementary Art Show!

Announcements |

What an amazing afternoon we had yesterday in Upper Elementary! Our Upper Elementary students invited their parents and our Primary and Lower Elementary classrooms to their Art Show.  The students worked for several weeks on creating a painting that was of inspiration to them.  Some children chose a different medium to highlight their creative art and displayed their final project through incredible photographs.

The students set up a gallery in which the children were able to walk through and view their work and ask any questions they may have.  They explained their original piece, the mediums they used, their creative process and several children also had a short biography “about the artist” in front of their work.

Thank you so much to the Upper Elementary students and Ms. Liz!  We all thoroughly enjoyed the Art Show!

Please enjoy some photos from the Art Show:

Happy New Year and Important Reminders

Announcements |

Happy New Year!  We hope everyone enjoyed the holiday vacation and is rested and refreshed for the 2018 Spring Semester!  The children are busy back in their classrooms and are happy to be with their friends and settling into the routine.

As we start the new year, we would like to bring your attention to a few important reminders:

  • The importance of being on time! We know getting back into the school routine presents its own sets of challenges, especially in the morning, but it is very important that your children arrive on time to school.  Children who enter the classroom late miss the ritual of the work day which makes them feel uncomfortable and without a sense of order for how to begin their day.  Additionally, it is important for children, as they grow and develop in all areas of life, to develop the habit of punctuality.  If you are struggling with your morning routine to get to school on time, please feel free to reach out to your teachers for advice on how to structure the morning.  As a reminder, below are the drop-off times for each grade level.  Please note that while there is a grace period for the morning drop-off, it is important that you remain in your window of opportunity as these are implemented to create a flow of traffic and to respect the AMI guidelines of a 3-hour, uninterrupted work period.

Elementary: 8:00am

Primary: 8:15-8:30am

Toddler: 8:30-8:45am

Pick-Up For the Children’s House: Please be mindful during afternoon pick-up to pull your car forward to allow space for passing cars.  Additionally, if you are not the first 3 cars in line, we ask that you please remain in your car before coming to sign your child out.

  • Sickness:  As the cold weather persists, we ask that you please be extra sensitive with your children and any symptoms they may be experiencing.  In an effort to keep everyone healthy, and in compliance with California State Licensing, if your child is experiencing any of the following symptoms, we ask that they stay home and remain symptom free for at least 24 hours before returning to school:

Fever, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, drainage from nose, severe cough, unusual color to skin or eyes, stiff neck and headache, difficulty breathing or wheezing, complaints of any pain, seeming to be abnormally tired and in need of rest.

Thank you and we look forward to another wonderful semester together!

Vacations and the Young Child

Announcements |

Vacations and the Young Child

By: Vivian Dubovoy Perlo

Winter break is here! Many families are looking forward to spending some special moments together. I wanted to share with you some suggestions to keep in mind when you have a young child at home:

  • The first and most important thing to remember is that children live in the moment; they might have to be given some time to warm up even to our closest relatives. Children do not develop the sense of time (e.g., “yesterday”, “in one hour”, “you will see them again tomorrow”) and therefore benefit greatly from knowing how their day will be like. Prepare your child; let him/her know who you are going to meet, if they are to be seated at a restaurant or who you will receive at home. If you have photos to show that would be even better.

  • Children thrive on routine and vacation time is characterized by the change of flow. Children eventually learn about this switch of schedule during vacation times but it is hard to grasp for a younger child; this doesn’t mean skipping the activities but altogether trying to respect their routine as much as possible. If you are traveling remember to bring some item that makes them feel at home elsewhere, like a book you read at night, a blanket or a favorite toy.

  • Children love to help and it is a great way to keep them busy and involved. Let them help in setting the table, preparing food and welcoming guests. These activities help the child getting used to the guests at the house and also allow family to get to know your child better without him/her having to perform for them.

  • Keep your expectations real; if your child feels overwhelmed by too many adults this is not going to change just because we want them to be in their best behavior. As adults, we have a better idea of how we want to spend our vacation time or holiday season, but for the child being offered our time, patience, understanding and love is the best way to spend their vacation time.

  • Don’t overload your days as this is usually the trigger to more emotional moments; children and parents at the end of the day are tired and feeling overwhelmed. Plan activities according to what your child can manage (e.g., going to the Zoo and looking at the elephants or the gorillas) and also activities you enjoy yourself.

  • For the young child it is important when planning a trip to remember they need to touch, climb and move. Try to avoid places where they need to stand in long lines and remember the real world is interesting enough for a child under the age of six. Try to keep your trips based on reality and not fantasy as children need tangible experiences to make sense of the world around them (e.g., going for a walk, smelling the flowers, collecting stones, building a sandcastle).

  • Be mindful that if you traveled to visit family or friends or welcomed guests at your home, that your child will need some time to get used to going back to the routine; especially when loved ones leave. Children are very sensitive to change and do not comprehend fully at this time the concept of saying good-bye (as opposed to the everyday bye-bye) and many times keep looking for the guests or relatives. Showing them pictures of the activities you enjoyed together might help them ease through the transition.

… filled with much love, joy and blessings!

Ms. Vivian

Children Take A Tour

Announcements |

Dear Parents,

What an eventful few days we have had since returning back from Thanksgiving Vacation!  Tomorrow, during our Parent Education Night, you will have the opportunity to visit the “next step” classroom.  Meaning, those of you who have children in Toddler will have the chance to tour Primary, those who have children in Primary will have the chance to tour Lower Elementary and of course, those of you who have children in Lower Elementary will tour Upper Elementary.  This is a wonderful opportunity to see “what’s next”!

Well, the children also want to see “what’s next”!  So, as some of your Primary children may have shared with you yesterday, the older Primary children have been taking a tour in the afternoon to see the Lower Elementary classroom.  In the next few days and weeks to come, we will be scheduling more tours with the Primary and Elementary children so that they can begin to see the link between not only the classrooms but the materials as well; thus, one day creating a beautiful, seamless transition from one environment to the next.

Please enjoy a few snapshots of some of the children taking a tour.  We look forward to sharing more with you tomorrow night!

Why Donate?

Announcements, Annual Giving Campaign |

Dear Parents,

As you all know, we are half-way through our Annual Giving Campaign.  We thank those of you who have already donated and we appreciate your support in working in partnership with our school.

For those of you who have yet to donate, either big or small, we encourage you to do so as we are seeking 100% participation from our families.  Collectively, we need everyone’s participation to make a difference.

Why Donate?

  1. To invest in your child’s future by making their school a better place.
  2. To raise teacher salaries and offer end-of-the-year bonuses.
  3. To offer scholarships to those families who need the extra support.
  4. To send your children’s teachers to a yearly “Refresher Course” hosted by AMI USA.
  5. To continue to offer two AMI trained Montessori Guides in the classroom as oppose to one guide and one assistant.
  6. To maintain both buildings by up-keeping and adding additions to the classrooms when necessary.

How did the School Apply the Donations Last Year?

  1. We opened an Upper Elementary Classroom.
  2. We purchased 5 new computers for the Elementary Computer Lab.
  3. The Children’s House was able to add two new child-sized sinks in the classrooms.
  4. We added a window in the Primary 2 to improve “blind spots” on the patio.
  5. We offered approximately $170,000 in just scholarships.
  6. We were able to send all of our teachers to the “Refresher Course”.
  7. Lower Elementary was able to connect the children’s bathroom to the classroom.

We need your support to continue offering the best education and the best environment to your children.  Make a difference, today!

Material Making:

Thank you to those who joined our first Material Making event! The teachers were so appreciative and impressed with all the material that was made for them.  Our next event is on Wednesday, October 15th.

Safety Drills:

As some of your children may have told you, we have been busy practicing our drills the past two weeks.  We started with a fire drill where we practiced how we would evacuate.  This week we practiced our earthquake drill and showed the children how to stop, drop, cover and hold on.

These are important drills to practice in the event we have an emergency, however, they are also important topics to discuss at home.  How would your family evacuate?  Do you have an emergency plan?  We encourage you to begin thinking and creating a plan for your family.

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to record our founder, Dr. Silvia Dubovoy, on her thoughts for the 2017-2018 school year.  Please take the time to listen to her video where she openly speaks from her heart and shares a few slides from one of her conferences.  This video highlights her vision for your child’s education here at MISD and illustrates how our school prepares your children for the future.

(Click here if you do not see the video above).

We are looking forward to welcoming you tomorrow at our Back to School Night!

Warmly,

The MISD Teachers and Staff

The Montessori Institute of San Diego (MISD) Children’s House has been serving and following the child since 2003. The Children’s House is the model school for the Montessori Institute of San Diego’s Teacher Training Center. We offer Toddler (18 mos to 3 years), Primary (3 to 6 years). In 2013 we added the Arts & Sciences Elementary programs (Lower Elementary: ages 6 to 9 • and Upper Elementary: ages 9 to 12).

One of the main goals of the MISD Toddler, Primary, and Elementary Programs is to guide, nurture and support the development of each individual child. The AMI trained staff at MISD is committed to offering an environment that provides for children’s inner, developmental needs while supporting each child to fulfill their highest, unique potential. We provide a holistic approach to education where the needs of the whole child are supported and addressed in addition to the academic needs. By providing a peaceful environment with purposeful work, we encourage children to develop a life-long love of learning fueled by their inner curiosity and self-initiative.

Thank you to the primary families for attending last night’s primary parent-child night!  The children were all very excited to show you what they are working on in their classrooms.  We hope you enjoyed seeing a slight glimpse into what a day is like in the life of a primary student.

Here are a few photos to recap the night.  More to come to the individual classroom blogs!

The Alphabet of Life: “What do you need for life—what do you need to be able to adapt to this world?”

“Montessori was concerned about how to make children happy. She gave the children a place to live. A place where they could live and they could act and they could really feel safe. Where they could acquire certain conditions for character development, which are: self-confidence, self-value, and a wonderful personality.”
